Gardening to Keep You Well During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Keeping fit and being healthy is important at any time, but during this pandemic, it is valuable that you have things to do to maintain your health and well-being.
Springtime is here, and you are supposed to get out with your gardening gear, but if you are among the millions quarantined at home due to COVID-19, start with something you can do in your backyard.
Gardening is good for the soul, proven by science- it does provide a spot for experiencing nature. Many studies revealed that gardening could reduce depression, anxiety, obesity, and even heart disease. Gardens are also known to be essential in supporting recovery from illness; merely looking at gardens, it can reduce stress, blood pressure, and muscle tension.
The coronavirus lockdown is the best time to have things to do in the garden you always wanted with a sense of pride and, of course, the pleasure for you and your whole household. Let start with something you can do in your backyard:
Go for easy-to-grow plants. Start with lettuce, arugula, peas, or bush beans. These vegetables grow fast and can do well in lower light conditions if you want them indoors. Grow vegetable scraps. Your kids might like this one. Many leafy vegetables such as romaine lettuce and bok choy will regrow from the parts you don’t eat.
Grow a vegetable garden. If you have a sunny patio or balcony and self-watering containers, it is easy to grow two full-sized tomato plants or whatever vegetables and herbs you choose.
Create a handy herb garden. Look for a sunny spot close to the kitchen door and plant an herb garden, either in a large pot or tub, make sure to have plenty of drainages. Remember to keep drought-loving herbs like rosemary, sage and lavender separate from more water-hungry herbs like basil, and water with a lighter hand.
Grow flowering plants
Many flowering plants are easy to grow, some variety of violets thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. In many studies explained that flowers refresh memory as we age, especially if you have senior citizens in your house. Flowers can act as natural support systems that help seniors cope with the challenges of aging.
More than anything, being in the garden and having this ‘release’ from being indoors, the internet, and the news is a lifesaver. These things to do can help us stay busy and active. That feeling of looking forward to the harvest of greens and veggies-relieving the anxiety of having to go to stores is a bonus!
