Get Your Kids Excited About St. Patrick’s Day with These Dishes from Orange County Events Staff

St. Patrick’s Day has inspired many Orange County events in the past. However, this year, things may look a little different. There may not be any parades or festivals in light of recent health concerns and social distancing guidelines. That being said, there are still plenty of at-home activities that families can do to celebrate the holiday. Even if you do not have Irish heritage, St. Patrick’s Day is a great opportunity to bond with kids, teach them about another culture, and eat some yummy food. Here are some of the best St. Patrick’s Day-themed snacks and dishes to try in lieu of Orange County events

Pistachio Cookies

Everyone knows that on St. Patrick’s Day, you have to wear green! So, of course, some of our favorite holiday recipes have green ingredients, like pistachios! If your kids aren’t a fan of the pistachio flavor, then you could also make a traditional sugar cookie with green food coloring or green sprinkles!

Irish Soda Bread

If you’re not a fan of the green-themed food, then you may opt for a more traditional recipe like Irish soda bread. For many households in Ireland, this recipe is a staple. You can introduce this food to your kids by giving them a brief history of Ireland and showing them why this bread was important for Irish families. Try it with tea, soup, or Irish stew!

Mint ‘n’ Chip Ice Cream Sandwiches

Kids loving having a sweet treat for the holidays. So, for St. Patrick’s Day, you can make it festive! Buy a pint of green mint ‘n’ chip ice cream and serve it between two chocolate chip cookies. Your kids will go crazy for it! Make sure you give them enough time to burn off the energy before bed.

Green Smoothie

St. Patrick’s Day treats don’t have to be unhealthy! If you want to introduce some veggies into the mix, then add some spinach or kale to a banana smoothie. Your kids will love the green color and won’t even be able to taste the vegetables! Sounds like a win-win to us.

Green Tea Pudding

Green comes in many shapes and sizes. For a delicious and festive pudding, add green tea powder! Pudding typically takes around two hours to chill, so make sure you give yourself enough time to make it before you want to serve. You can also top this pudding with whipped cream!

Zucchini Noodles

If you want to make your meal green and healthy, then try zucchini noodles! These thinly sliced vegetables will soak up the flavor of any pasta sauce and taste great when topped with mozzarella cheese. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a meal that both you and the kids will appreciate.

Irish Mashed Potatoes

What’s more Irish than potatoes? Incorporate Irish mashed potatoes to your St. Patrick’s Day dinner for that warm, comfort-food atmosphere. These potatoes taste great with chopped green onions on top. Plus, they add just a touch of green to the dish!

Irish Brown Bread

There are many authentic Irish dishes that you can enjoy on St. Patrick’s Day, like Irish brown bread! With a dark color and dense texture, this bread makes for a filling breakfast or pre-dinner snack. Add clotted cream, jam, or butter to enhance the flavor!

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by making these delicious and festive dishes with your kids!
