Are you looking for a fun and active activity to do with your friends or family around Irvine? Things are slowly opening up, and we have gathered the top 8 Orange County events that will make you laugh and also break a sweat.
Soccer Pick-Up Games
Every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 9 pm, soccer pick-up games are happening at the Orange County Great Park. The games are open to anyone with an RSVP. You don’t have to be great at soccer, as long as you bring your motivation and attitude to be a good teammate. If you want to be a little more competitive you can join their advanced pick-up game on Thursdays.
Soccer is a good sport to get in shape, gain strength and endurance, and it’s a great way to meet people and exercise with friends. It can be a lot of running, so make sure you bring a bottle of water with you and hydrate regularly.
Early Morning Pickleball
Every third Wednesday at 6:30 am you can join a Pickleball group at Portola Springs Community Park. Everyone is welcome, from beginners to moderate. It’s a great way to start your day, with fresh air and a great workout.
Pickleball combines elements of badminton, tennis, and ping-pong, and you need a paddle racket and a perforated polymer ball. This sport is a great way to exercise and meet some new people.
OCC Tennis
Bring a can of tennis balls with you for ample play, be kind to other members and play some matches with OCC Tennis. The tennis group is for intermediate to advanced players, and they mostly play in Irvine and Santa Ana. They run certain tennis socials, weekend tournaments, and also get-togethers for those who are more passionate and want to play non-competitive tennis.
Tennis has amazing health benefits, like increasing aerobic capacities, improving metabolic function, lowering body fat, and increasing reaction times.
Fullerton Hillcrest Park Stairs
The Fullerton Hillcrest Park Stairs make for a great workout. Meet new people and break a sweat every Saturday at 11 am. Hiking is a great way to feel confident in your physical stamina, and feel emotionally and mentally strong. There are several lots around the park where you can easily find free parking.
Hiking is a low-impact workout that helps you relax and get away from the stress of the city. Don’t forget to stay hydrated, bring sunscreen, snacks, and wear a hat and sturdy shoes.
Bike Ride
Take advantage of the bike paths in Orange County and take your bike for a ride. There are many bike paths around Irvine, but the Back Bay Dr. Path is a perfect bike ride because it’s easy to maintain distance from other cyclists and hikers. The path goes along the east side of Upper Newport Bay and it takes you all the way down to Balboa Island. You can make it as long as you want wide for a group of bikers, and it’s pretty flat. Out and back is a total of 10 miles.
Cycling is a great way to stay in shape and prevent injuries because it is a low-impact sport and it increases bone density.
Yoga In The Park
Yoga in the park is a donation-based yoga program that wants to provide the community the best yoga instructions to better foster love in everyone. Morning yoga in the Mike Ward Community Park Woodbridge is a great way to start your day. Classes are open to everyone, all ages, and all levels. Make sure you wear some comfortable clothes and don’t forget to bring sunscreen, water, and a yoga mat.
Yoga helps with balance, flexibility and relaxes your body and your mind. It’s a great way to start your day because it brings energy to your body and it brightens your mood.
Social (ly distant) Run
While Covid is still a concern, the Orange County Runners don’t stop training and connecting with others. They welcome all levels, whether you are a regular runner or a beginner, they want you to join them on their mission to maintain a healthy lifestyle and have fun along the way. They meet every Wednesday in Irvine for runs, socializing, and food.
While running has a higher impact, it’s the sport of our ancestors, some people even believe our body is built to run. Regular running will give you a toned, fit body, and it will help you reduce weight because it burns a lot of calories.
Virtual and Outdoor Zumba
If you like to dance and get fit at the same time, you’ll enjoy a good Zumba class. Certified instructors will lead you through one hour of fun and energetic Zumba dancing Saturdays and Sundays at 10 am in front of the Legacy Education Center in West Yale Loop. These classes are for every level, if you’ve never done Zumba before, keep moving with the beat of the music. The songs are mostly top hits, normally Latin, pop, and hip hop. These classes are great to burn up to 600 calories, feel energized and meet fun people.
